The Wrecking Crew (2025)

Yet another action movie released to stream, this one on Prime, but thankfully this one is an absolute blast. Two half brother's James (David Bautista) and Johnny (Jason Momoa) reunite after the suspicious death of their Father. The whole movie is face punching, bullet ridden, crash bang wallop car chases, machine gun toting Helicopters,  but most importantly of all it's very entertaining, some great jokes and Momoa and Baustista are huge value for money, Morena Baccarin is just as cool the sexy sassy kick ass "side kick" Wife Valentina ("your wife is HOT!") a kind of modern day "Lethal Weapon" and I loved  the hilarious "fat John Cena" gag amongst the flurry of one liners and put downers.

Chloe (2009)

THERE BE SPOILERS!
A Doctor, hires a high class call girl to test her Husband's fidelity as she suspects him of having affairs. Well that's what we'd all do, hire a 24yr old sex bomb to see see if YOUR husband doesn't get randy! The cast it must be said  are top drawer, the Husband and Wife are played by the excellent Liam Neeson and equally brilliant Julianne Moore, whilst the call girl is, again, the top casting of Amanda Seyfried. It's all very "Fatal Attraction", but it heads into the world of melodrama far too often, which is a pity as there is a good story here, Seyfried is brilliant as the unhinged Chloe, but this film could have gone into a real dark direction, but no, being Hollywood, they bottle it, throw in a Lesbian affair to keep the fella's awake, and everyone lives happily ever after, except the Hooker who crashes through a window onto the patio!

Texas Chainsaw (2013)

Yes, they made another Chainsaw movie, and I'll show my hand here, there was pretty much only one reason to revisit this and that was for the "ample charms", sorry, star quality of Alexandra Daddario , so, enough of this piffle, is it any good 13 years later?

Well it's a game of two halves it must be said, the first 40 minutes is riddled with the usual cliched characters, hicks with Cowboy hats, good Cop, bad Cop  (you can see why Trump got in) piss poor dialogue "I'm banging you-keep your hands off my shit!". The film was originally released as 3D (what a success that was) but thankfully it doesn't rear it's ugly head to obviously, just the usual chainsaw aimed at the viewer. The gore level is near non-existent but when the second half kicks in we get a nice chainsaw through the body and a juicy one in someone's ankle.
Alexandra is a great scream queen, though it is amusing how her hair looks so perfect with the Hell she's trying to escape! Trash in all fairness, but I love that, so, entertaining trash!

Untitled Home Invasion Romance (2025)

"Untitled Home Invasion Romance" is quite a title, and not one that would spring out and put on your 'to watch list', but I seriously urge you to. Jason Biggs (he of the "American Pie" movies) plays Kevin, his marriage is on the rocks so he plans a nice romantic vaction to relight the fire, it just involves a fake break in to the holiday home they're staying at so he can save the day and play the hero. This is such a fun black comedy thriller, the plot and dialogue is a total blast, so much silliness, you can't figure where the film is going to go, but it keeps the entertainment to the max throughout the entire running time, right to it's bloody finale. Jason Biggs as well as one of the main leads with Meaghan Rath as his fed up Wife Suzie also directed it and he does a great job, it's a crazy mad story and highly recommended.

Anaconda (2025)

It's not a reboot or a remake of the film of the same name from back in but a parody instead, a kind of snakes in the jungle "Tropic Thunder". The cast is top draw, Paul Rudd, Thandie Newton, Jack Black (who I've always loved) and the brilliant Steve Zahn as a recovering alcoholic! The reviews from the snooty critic were slightly negative at 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, but ignore them, a positive 76% from the general public and I'm firmly in that boat being hunted by a 20 foot snake! It's great fun, loads of cheesy gags (the scene involving Jack Black with a dead Hog on his back and a squirrel in his mouth-I'll leave that here) and as I said ,a great solid cast who can do comedy, the CGI snake definitely works, the Amazon scenery is stunning,  solid stupid fun that's got a lot of bite!

Never Take Sweets From A Stranger (1960)

A British family move to Canada, one evening the family's daughter can't sleep and tells how she hurt her foot at an elderly neighbours home, and reveals the shocking tale at what the Man had asked her and her friend to do. Produced by Hammer Studio's, this was probably a bit too much for them and was sold off to a 'grind core' company "Omat". Esteemed actor, the great Christopher Lee described the movie as "ahead of it's time" and it certainly was, dealing with a taboo subject rarely dealt with all these years later. The newly arrived family, outsiders by geography and class, find their warnings dismissed, belittled, and even mocked by locals desperate to maintain appearances.
"I'm not denying that the old Man didn't get a little fresh with the two girls"
What makes the film still provocative is its blunt portrayal of authority figures—police, courts, neighbours—minimising the accusation’s gravity. The finale is a slightly over the top but quite chilling, but even today, its attitude to "lower classes" and not of "one's with power" feels painfully relevant all these years later giving the film a chilling, grim, resonance.

The Wolf Of Wall Street (2013)

A rewatch of an absolute classic.

Leonardo De Caprio stars as Jordan Belfort,   the "wolf of Wall street", the true story of how a young 20 year old  something who rose from 'penny stocks' to a Wall Street broker employing 1000 brokers and earning millions, most of it through illegal selling.

Take a fascinating story of corporate greed from a man who modelled himself on Gordon Gecko, directed by the one and only Martin Scorsese, throw in a hugely talented cast of Jonah Hill, Mathew McConnaughy, Rob Reiner, Margot Robbie and a scintillating screenplay and you get the most entertaining 3 hours of film you could hope for. At times hysterically funny (the Quaalude over dose scene being the highlight) great storytelling, De Caprios voice over up there with Ray Liotta's in 'Good Fellas', and you get a movie who's long running time is swallowed up like the people who dared trust in these people featured.

Epic, stylish, hilarious, thunderously entertaining.

5/5 bitches!

You Can't Kill Stephen King (2013)

It's a good premise, a comedy horror about a (deliberately) clichéd group of teens/twenty somethings, on holiday in Maine being hunted down by a maniac, obviously influenced by local hero Stephen King, but what a mess.

The Grand Daddy of this genre of course is Scream, but in the past decade or so  we've had  such treats as 'Tucker And Dale vrs Evil' and '100 Bloody Acres', two great movies that were funny, gory and had a affection for the genre they were parodying, this is just a lazy effort, sporadically amusing, only slightly gruesome, and its only saving grace for us lads being the ample charms of Kayle Blogna as Nicole, very disappointing.

Jailbait (2014)

Titling a movie 'Jailbait' is pretty ballsy it must be said, you'd have to be careful googling the movie and worrying  about your front door being kicked down, but this is a prison movie, Anna (Sara Malakul Lane) is sent down for the murder of her abusive stepfather for 4-9 years after being betrayed by her awful Mother in court, she must now to learn to survive the harsh environment she faces. Yes its a cheap and cheesy by the numbers women in prison movie , one of those  80s bleak exploitation movies back in the day that filled the VHS £1 a rental video stores (fun times it must be said), but you really do care for Anna as she descends into a violent abusive drug fueled hell, the usual cliches are there, gang violence, the vile perverted prison staff,  a lot, and I mean a lot of T&A (Sara Malakul Lane isn't shy!) but on the whole this is a surprisingly good cheap-ass  exploitation flick.

Amy Madigan gets an Oscar nomination for 'Weapons'

Thoroughly deserved too!

Finally The Oscars giving great Horror the recognition it deserves.

Also 16 nomination's for 'Sinners' and also on the short list are nominations for 'Frankenstein', 'Bugonia', 'The Ugly Stepsister' and 'Jurassic World: Rebirth'.

Devils Candy (2015)

Now this movie flew past my radar all these years, it popped up on one my you-tuber recommendations, so better late than never. Was it worth it? Hell (literally) yeah! The premise is quite simple, a family move into their new home, knowing two people died there, but not how or why. This is bloody and loud with lashings of the red stuff and a Heavy Metal soundtrack to boot, what's not to love?? The performances are excellent throughout, especially Kiara Glasco as the young daughter Zooey who gives turns in a great scream "Queen" final girl (kind of) finale as all Hell breaks loose. Highly recommended stuff and the credits play out with Metallica's "For Whom The Bell Tolls" fuck yeah!!

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026)

It's the sequel to the sequel and rest assured it is bat shit bonkers, Ralph Fiennes and Jack O'Connell are both outstanding as the lead roles, as are the young cast as the "fingers". It's brutal and bloody from the very off, the finale is crazy, I saw this at the Vue Epic screening, the sound is off the scale, as was the picture, and it's worth experiencing in this cinema for the Iron Maiden "Number Of The Beast" finale, Fiennes is having the time of his life, as are the rest of the cast, utterly crazy film making and great "fun"!

"This goes up to eleven"-what a line.

Adolescence (2025)

When you host a blog called "The Absolute Horror", this masterpiece of TV drama really does fit the bill, real life unimaginable horror and grief. First things first, THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS!!

The acting in this Netflix series is off the scale, there are three pivotal moments I think show the power of this drama. Episode 1 when Stephen Graham as the Father Eddie being shown the shocking CCTV footage of his son Jamie cold bloodily murdering the schoolgirl. Episode 3 when the incredible acting talents of Owen Cooper and psychologist Erin Doherty are show in full force, one of the most brutal 60 minutes of TV drama ever. Who though can forget the final scenes of Stephen Graham breaking down in the final episode leading to the gut wrenching scene of him lying on his son's bed, overwhelmed by grief at the "loss" he and his family have to live with, just unbelievable drama, and which fully deserves every single award.

1000 out of a 1000.

Getaway (2013)

Ethan Hawke is Brent Magna (now there's a movie name) is a burnt out ex-race car driver, his Wife is kidnapped and he is forced to follow orders on a do or die mission by a mysterious voice.

IT'S CARMAGEDDON!

The fellas get Selena Gomez and the Ladies get the cool Ethan Hawke, but that's where the plus points end, it's a live action 'Need For Speed' video game, a continuous loop of brain dead plot, car chases (why don't the Police deploy a helicopter?) explosions, and bad guys who can't shoot straight. Selena Gomez character is the precocious teen hoodie brat, but also a tech genius, who's favourite word is "asshole!", Jon Voight as the 'voice' is straight out of the 1960's James Bond hall of villains, minus purring white cat, this is the cinematic equivalent of banging your head on a car bonnet for 90 minutes, Nick Cage must have been busy during casting, an oldie but not necessarily a goody.

Cabin Fever: Patient Zero (2014)

Josh (Brandon Eaton) arranges a pre-wedding surprise Bachelor party for his brother Marcus (Mitch Ryan) to a remote island, before you know it they're 'shot gunning' cans of beer, hanging out with a blow up doll. smoking the obligatory weed, and Josh's hot girlfriend Penny(Jillian Murray) has tagged along for the movie eye candy quota. Before you know it though things have gone pear shaped when the party goers are infected by a flesh eating disease.

The usual horror clichés are present, occasional dumb dialogue ("hello.....hello....is anyone there?") lots of running around in the dark, but it's an enjoyable bloody romp with a slightly mad bitch fight finale and everyone ending up looking like a dropped pizza!

1408 (2007)

A writer famous for debunking 'haunted house' stories,  stays a night at The Dolphin Hotel in the infamous room 1408, the owner begs him not to, previous guests have taken their lives to 'escape' the horrors it apparently hides.

A superb psychological, claustrophobic horror, it has an underlying sense of dread and helplessness, Cusack is awesome as usual, adapted from a short story by Stephen King and very similar in tone to the masterful 'The Shining'.The film relies on genuine scares and not buckets of blood or dopey American teens running away from rednecks, and is one of the finest mature horror films from the  past 20 years.

4.5/5

Nurse (2013)

By day Abby Russell (Paz De La Huerta) is a dedicated Nurse, helping the sick and needy, but by night, she's a female 'vigalante', luring cheating men to their brutal deaths, she takes a younger Nurse Danni (Katrina Bowden) under her wing as mentor, but soon Danni becomes to suspect Abby of foul play.

Well the thought of a buxom Nurse butchering her way though 90 mins of late night schlock horror sleaze had my boxes ticked but sadly 'Nurse' is for the most part condition critical. Yes the finale is bonkers, a bitch fight, lashings of cheap ultra violence (scalpels in eyeballs etc) and Nursey turns into an unstoppable Terminator killing 'machine' but the previous hour is a let down. Paz's  trashy dialogue is painfully delivered in an awful monotone drall, it's all  a bad mix of 'Fatal Attraction' and a female 'Death Wish' (though 1980's revenge flick, the excellent 'Ms. 45' springs to mind) and the only saving grace early on is Katrina Bowden sporting an outfit sponsored by Anne Summers!

2.5/5

The Hunt (aka Jagten) 2012

Lucas (Mads Mikkelson) is rebuilding his life, recently divorced, an ex school teacher, he now works at a local nursery in his Danish small town, life is showing signs of improvement. His life though will change forever when a young girls untruthful remark throws his life into chaos as the townsfolk turn against him.

Mikkelson puts in a stellar performance, tortured by painful untruths, this is a powerful performance in an intense and devastating Danish drama that is well worth seeking out

4/5

Teeth (2007)

'Teeth' is the "every day" tale of Dawn, a High School student suppressing her sexual desires, only to discover that she has, a,umm toothed vagina.

Rape, incest, sexual abuse and masturbation are the movies main subjects, so you'd expect some kind repellent twisted grim horror flick, well twisted yes, but the movie has a wonderful black horror humour running through it's veins, wholly original, and pretty clever, and sure to be a bit of an underground cult horror classic with plenty of bite which is well worth seeking out and sinking your, umm, teeth into!

28 Years Later (2025)

Now this is embarrassing. I actually included this movie in my disappointing movies of 2025 post last month but did mention I might have had a memory lapse or dare I say, "brain fart" as to the actual movie, so with the impending '29 Years Later: The Bone Temple' due this week and with great early reviews I though I must give it a "rewatch", so has my opinion changed?

Yep.

Many years ago I watch one of the much anticipated 'Avengers' movies, I think it was 'Endgame', watched it ( I thought) nope, yes what must have been the first 20 minutes, snoozed off, then saw the finale thinking well that was piss poor, after a rewatch, realized the brain had 2 hours off! This is the same, a rewatch, not late evening, mid afternoon, concentration set to max and boy it delivers. No, its a different beat from it's two incredible prequels, but this is still class horror film making, much more of a slow burner, when the violence kicks off it's extreme, but this is more about the horror the  characters are facing in this Zombie apocalypse. The acting is first class, as is the cast, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the wonderful Jodie Comer with a powerhouse performance and of course, Ralph Fiennes.

Next stop- '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple', can't frickin' wait!

5 Anticipated new horror films for 2026!

Here's five horror movies due for release in the coming few months and they all look pretty, pretty blood red juicy.

1. 'Werewulf '- yes another Werewolf movie but this one caught my attention as it's directed by Robert Eggers who created the fantastic 'Nosferatu' remake a few years ago, I've seen some screen shots of the creature and it looks awesome.

2. 'Hokum' - this one I'd not heard of but it sounds quite wacky, a horror writer inherits a house which seems to be haunted by a Witch, pretty sure this wasn't on 'Homes Under The Hammer'!!

3. 'This Is Not A Test' - Zombies attack a High School, Hell yeah!!!

4. 'They Will Kill You' - don't know much about this but the trailer looks good and the Directors previous movie was the top notch 'Why Don't You Just Die'

5. 'Evil Dead Burn' - loved the remake which is an absolute classic, Rise I thought was a bit of a let down, don't get me wrong, it's a good movie, but the magnificent standards of the previous release were so high, but this 2026 release is directed by the same guy who gave us the fabulous spider flick 'Infested' two years ago and apparently it's very dark and gory!!

Robocop (2014)

Released over 10 years ago this was the remake nobody wanted or expected, the 1987 original is a bona-fide sci-fi classic, a political satire that is even more relevant in 2026 USA, the sequel I enjoyed, so did this justify (pun intended) it's release....

No.

The cast is good, some heavy-weights, Michael Keaton, Samuel Jackson, Gary Oldman, that's pretty much the plus points. A dull slow paced first hour, Robocop's suit like he's more designed for some extreme sports, the film is extinguished of it's originals satire, black humour, cartoon ultra-violence, this is strictly clean PG13 video game style action, a film that is just mediocre and to be honest rather dull.

Robocop, you were found guilty of blandness.

2/5

Big Ass Spider (2013)

When you're going to watch a low budget movie entitled "Big Ass Spider" you know how far, or high, the bar will be set, and this what was, straight to DVD back in the day, B-movie thankfully doesn't disappoint.

Yes the special effects are pretty ropey to say the least, but director Mike Mendez has his tongue firmly in his cheek, it's fun and daft, lead Greg Grunberg is a likeable as the arachnid hunter out to save Los Angeles, and the whole thing is an affectionate tribute to the 50's giant creature flicks.

Vicious (2025)

One late evening a lone Woman Polly played by Dakota Fanning has a visit from a slightly unhinged pensioner (who reminded me of the character Gladys from 'Weapons') who tells her she's going to die, and leaves a mysterious box behind...Dakota Fanning is excellent and in pretty much every frame of the movie, this is a sinister freaky ride of a movie, I'm not quite sure of the set up for the plot, why is she targeted with these terrible tasks, but it's a creepy little movie and worth a watch.

4/5

Day Shift (2022)

'Day Shift' was released on Netflix back in 2022 and to be honest I'd never heard of it until a fellow horror friend recommended it to me. 'Day Shift' is a full on horror/comedy, Jamie Foxx play's Bud who's ruse is he's a pool cleaner in LA when he is actually a Vampire Hunter. Teamed up with the funny Dave Franco, it's the old bad tempered mismatch duo, but it really works, both characters are great fun, the Vampire scenes are top notch, great visual and practical effects, loads and I mean loads of gore, what's not to like!

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Ape (2014)

2011's "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" was both a huge success financially and critically, I re-watched it last night and had forgotten what a huge achievement it was, exciting, emotional and incredibly intelligent film making, so the planned release of this sequel back in 2014 was high on my 'to see' list, if not number 1.

The  reviews on release  were very, very positive, 90%+ on Rotten Tomatoes, so expectation was high, I settled down to watch it, would it deliver.....oh yes, and some! First things first, the sfx are astonishing, these are living, breathing Apes, Chimpanzees etc, full of character, personality, yes personality, a joy to watch. The screenplay is mesmerising, thoughtful, intelligent, the action engrossing, edge of your seat stuff, I seriously think this film is a notch above it's illustrious predecessor, yes the humans do take second fiddle to the Apes (these aren't just a bunch of Monkeys!) but you still get excellent performances from the two leads Gary Oldman (obviously) and Jason Clark ("Zero Dark Thirty").

Compelling awesome film-making and an absolute classic, but just a pity that the third in the series 'War For The Planet Of The Apes' released in 2017 was such a disappointment.
4.5/5

The Housemaid (2025)

A rich couple hire a Housemaid Millie (Sydney Sweeney) to do everyday chores, but soon the Wife (Amanda Seyfried) turns out to be a little bit unhinged to say the least. This is great fun with a cool cast, Seyfried is fantastic with a great performance as the psychotic Nina, her Husband Andrew played by the super smooth Brandon Skienar, trying to steady the very rocky boat, and Sydney Sweeney, well let's just say seeing her on the big screen was more than a treat on an early Monday morning!! The plot is very good with a nice juicy twist, try and avoid any spoilers because things really don't pan out as you might expect!!

4.5/5

Thirteen Days (2000)

'Thirteen Days' is a gripping reminder of how little the world understood just how close we came to World War III.I cannot believe this masterclass in film-making has slipped under my radar, but with how things are panning out in the US I thought it was well worth a watch, and boy is it. The film turns the Cuban Missile Crisis into a nerve‑shredding cat‑and‑mouse thriller, charting each escalation with an almost unbearable sense of inevitability. Its long runtime becomes an asset, allowing tension to accumulate in slow, deliberate waves as political manoeuvring tightens the noose. Outstanding performances across the board ground the drama in human stakes, Costner of course is superb, the constant bickering between Politicians and the armed forces is edgy and cold. It’s a masterclass in sustained suspense, revealing that if things had gone as many feared, I wouldn't be on this Earth now!!!!

America had great leaders and diplomats 50 years ago, things now are far more sinister and dangerous, as all the orange cock womble see's is dollar signs $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Best Comedies of 2025.

It's got to be said the Comedy film genre has been weak for some time now, hate to use the word woke but that's what it seems to be, can you imagine movies such as 'There's Something About Mary', 'Dumb And Dumber', 'Borat', or 'Team America' being released now? No. So slim picking's but here's a few that contained plenty of mirth.

* 'Chicken Town'-cracking Brit comedy which hardly anyone will have seen, well worth checking out, good 'Brassic' feel to it's madness.

* 'The Roses'- excellent remake of the classic late 80's early 90's 'War Of The Roses'

* 'The Naked Gun'- a "reimagining of the classic, Leslie Neelson and Pamela Anderson are great value for money.

* 'Marching Powder'- I don't care, I love the Dyer, always value for money, lude and crude but it'll put a smile on your fackin' boat race.

* 'Novacaine'- Utterly mad, reminded me of the 'Crank' movies, disengage brain-enjoy.

* 'Another Simple Favor'- another movie that got a lot of shit flicked at it, original was a laugh and so is this and just love Anna Kendrick doing comedy roles, she's just gert lush!

Risque (2025)

The plot for 'Risque' is a group of strippers seek revenge on the Boss by carrying out a high-stakes heist. Now I love a heist movie, so the prospect of one involving strippers, umm, grabbed my attention! And the first 20 minutes will definitely grab your attention, it's no messing around getting to know these Ladies, good grief, talk about not dilly dallying around, but to be fair once the heist plot develops it is an enjoyable piece of fun trash, and not just for the abundance of T&A, and there is plenty. The characters are fairly likeable, it's daft, crass but good fun, Yee Ha!

The 5 most disappointing films of 2025

These are the 5 most disappointing movies I thought released last year, what they all have in common is they are all sequels of movies in which the previous release I absolutely loved! So, enough of this piffle, here's the wet farts of 2025...

1. '28 Years Later'-where do I start, the previous two were horror classics, in fact I rewatched 28 Weeks Later and it's still a bona-fide classic, this new one I might have to rewatch, such was my disappointment I think my brain has wiped my memory of it!

UPDATE: Yes my brain did fail, now rewatched and reviewed here, a moment when I obviously dozed off and woke up with a blurred memory of even watching it !!!!

2. 'Black Phone 2'-again, the original from a few years back was a classic which I saw on the big screen, never got round to seeing at the Cinema, thank gawd, a ridiculous sequel with a daft supernatural plot.

3.'Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning'-never been a great fan of the series but 2023 'Dead Reckoning Part 1' was a belter of an action movie, this has it's moments but for so much of it's bloated running I was wondering when they would wrap this up.

4.'M3gan 2.0'- where do I start with this one, 'M3gan' was a blast, yeah it could have upped the gore but was trashy and fun, this is just drab trash with a pointless sci-fi twist.

5.'Knives Out-Wake Up Dead Man'- Again the previous 2 installments were great fun, 'Columbo' style whodunnits, this one, who cares who did it!

I haven't included 'Fear Street: Prom Night', a movie I was so looking forward to, the previous three entries were great, especially the 1978 and 1994 releases were classics, this though, the reviews were so damning I just can't be bothered with it. Another one I've avoided is 'Happy Gilmore 2', the original was a 90's Adam Sandler crass ass cracking laugh, again, reviews I tend to ignore but the overwhelming hate this film got from YouTubers I respect, Cody Leach, Drum Dums etc, just put me right off it.

Man Finds Tape (2025)

Man Finds Tape has an intriguing premise but unfolds at a slightly sluggish pace, testing the patience of anyone expecting sharper momentum. As a found‑footage entry, it leans heavily on handheld authenticity, yet the jumpy, erratic camera work becomes slightly annoying and distracting. There’s a decent story here but the whole film never got my full attention, I think it's a case of seen it all before and maybe the whole "found footage" genre is getting tired even though this one tries to add something new to the narrative.

3.5/5

Delivery Run (2025)

Have you seen the classic Spielberg 70's thriller 'Duel'? Good, then there's no need to waste 80 minutes on this. No, it's not a bad movie, it's just not very....thrilling, scary or good. Lead character Lee played by Alexander Arnold, is an incredibly annoying lead, constantly whining, moaning, the other characters are all equally obnoxious cartoon character rednecks, especially the Cop, who's actions are utterly preposterous throughout, sample scene "You've got blood on your hand, that's not your blood, you're under-arrest!!"
Real grade B film-making.
