Nil By Mouth (1997)

 

Incredible to think this British cinema classic is approaching 30 years since it's release, and it's punch even now is still as brutal. Written, directed AND produced by the legend that is Gary Oldman, this is a real life "horror" film. It's bleak, and unrelenting, dealing with drug abuse, crime and alcoholism resulting in a horrendous act of act of violence, not shown on screen, which adds to the unrelenting terror that is being permutated. The two leads, two of our greatest actors Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke are just sensational, Kathy's performance after the horrendous assault is just heart-breaking. The film would go on to win a string of much deserved awards at the BAFTA's, including best film, actor awards for Ray and Kathy, screenplay and best debut for Gary Oldman. A classic powerful, soul destroying piece of Cinema.
